December Club projects

For December, we used X7146B Wonderland My Reflections kit. Since not everybody lives where there's snow, I wanted to create a layout that was wintery, and then one that would be something totally different from the usual winter layout.

So, this is the layout I came up with. The large snowflake and dot papers came from the Wonderland kit, and the small bamboo flower paper came from a previous My Reflections kit called Bliss. I loved the Bliss papers!

For our Stamp a Stack club, we used C1468 Winter Joy, along with the same Wonderland papers.

The snowflakes were cut from the Close To My Heart Art Philosophy Cricut cartridge.

Our new scrap club starts in February with layouts done from the Magic Idea Book. There's always openings in both the scrap club and the Stamp a Stack club. Email me if you'd like any details.

Studio J Calendar

For Christmas this year, I wanted to give my Cruisin' Buddy something that she will treasure always. Here it is 2011 and we're still talking and scrapping our Mediterranean Cruise from 2008! When the project started, we thought we'd just scrap a few pictures from each of the wonderful places we visited and then put the rest in photo pages. Well, that's just not happening as we keep seeing more pictures that need to be scrapped. LOL!! Every time we sit to scrap we relive our days. So, for one of this year's gifts, I took some of our photos and scrapped them using CTMH's Studio J. Then I ordered the JPEG files for only $3 for each two page layout. Since each file comes through with both single files of each page and also the double page layouts, it gave me the opportunity to use each of the pages as a page in the calendar.

I then looked online to find one of the companies that would create a calendar with the 12x12 pages. Turns out that Snapfish was having an awesome special, buy 1 calendar, get 2 free! So, I was able to get a calendar for myself, and I also put together a simple calendar of photos of my husband and our grandson on all the different tractors and rideable (is that even a word? LOL) things that we have. We always joke that the grandson doesn't need to go to the amusement park as he has more rides here. LOL! Anyway, the calendar of my husband and grandson was the hit of Christmas and brought tears to our daughter's eyes. I just ordered another copy as a surprise for my husband. :)

Anyway...I digress! LOL! I opted for the black background on the 12x12 Snapfish calendar as the layouts also had black in them. Then it was just drag and drop of the layouts into the wells. I chose the "text only" option, and it allowed me to drop the whole page right into it and then there's a nice black frame around the layout. At the end of the year, my Cruisin' Buddy and I will be able to slip those 12x12 pages into page protectors and into our albums.

So, here's the layouts. I was trying to get them to link from Snapfish, but it doesn't actually show it as the calendar when you view my album. It's just the layouts. So, I made a slideshow of each of the pages instead. I hope you like it and it will give you some ideas for future gifts.

Christmas Tree

I was due for a change! For the last 13 years our tree has been decorated in shades of burgundy, pink and gold. It was time for something new, so, I went with blues and silver this year. I'm very pleased with how the tree turned out.

Where are the days going? I can't believe that Christmas is less than a week away! Have you finished your Christmas shopping yet? I haven't...hard to believe, isn't it. LOL! Heading out tomorrow to see how much I can get done.

Anyway, I wanted to post the club projects that we did in November. We used CTMH's X7142B Dreamin' My Reflections kit. This first set of pages is Rhapsody.

And this set is Perfect Prelude.

For the October Imagine Club we used X7140B Roxie My Reflections Kit. We also used the corresponding My Stickease. I love these papers! The first is based on the Monologue layout, but with a more modern look. For the second layout, I used Personality Presence but changed it a bit to accent the beautiful background papers.

For our Stamp a Stack club, we used D1492 Christmas Love. We also used some of the Believe My Reflections Kit. We also used a little of one of the retired Creative Basics papers.

I love this stamp set! It's called Enjoy Life. I love the vintage type stamp sets. This card was created using the CTMH You Rock papers. The paper pack is no longer available, but, here's the instructions for the card.

4 ¼” x 5 ½” side fold card base

4 ¼” x 5 ½” You Rock Denim Dot B&T
3 ¾” x 5” You Rock Swirl/Star B&T
3 ½” x 4 ¾” Honey Cardstock
3 ¼” x 4” Outdoor Denim Card stock
2” x 3” White Card stock
1 ½” x 3” White Card stock

Stamp the two corner stamps with Z2162 Honey Ink. Stamp bike and sentiment with Z2140 Outdoor Denim. Attach stamped images to Outdoor Denim cardstock and then to Honey card stock. Attach Swirl/Star B&T to Outdoor Denim B&T. Attach matted stamped image to card front as shown. Attach card front to card base.

September CTMH Club projects

For our September Imagine Club, we used X7144B Mischief Level 2 My Reflections Kit. I had so much fun doing these layouts as I absolutely love the new X7144C My Compliments Rub-ons. This layout is called Medley. You know what's really cool about the papers? On the top of each sheet of paper there's a little strip that includes information about the paper package on one side, and the other side has a design.

This layout is also created from the Mischief paper pack. I love how we can get two totally different looks from one package of paper. This layout is called Memoirs Complete.

For the Stamp a Stack Club, we used D1481 Vintage Type. I cut all of the tags, banners and and the little circles using the CTMH Art Philosophy Cricut cartridge. The papers used to create the cards are a previous, no longer available Creative Basics pack (the Christmas papers) and the new X7139B Typeset papers.

August Club Projects

In our August Stamp a Stack club, we used stamp set D1491 Hooray Bouquet. I love the fact that CTMH has reduced the prices of the stamps, as now we can use some D sets in the club. The flowers can be cut on the Cricut as this stamp set goes with the Art Philosophy cartridge. As you browse through the Close To My Heart Idea Book, you'll see stamp images that have a red line drawn around them. That red line means there is a matching Cricut shape on the cartridge. On the carrier sheet of stamps, you'll also find that it tells you what size to cut the image in order for it to match the stamp. How cool is that?! The scallop circle card was also cut using the Art Philosophy cartridge.

For our August Imagine Club, we used X7143B Sonoma Level 2 Paper Pack. This paper is just so pretty. I also cut the doily circle from the new CTMH Art Philosophy Cricut cartridge. I cut it in half and used it at the top and bottom of the two Olive photo mats.

Here's a couple of ways to do picture Christmas/Holiday cards:

Create a layout using one of the layouts with big photo wells. Then take the free JPG and print 4x4 or5x5 images on your home computer or pay the $0.10-0.19/ea at your favorite store. Attach them to a card base and gussy them up with some papers, ribbons, poinsettias, or other embellishments and you're done.

Another way to create your Christmas/Holiday is to create your layout using a picture of each family member in a photo well. Then, take your FREE JPG to CVS, Walgreen's or where you prefer to have your picture cards printed. You can put Happy Holidays from and then all the names of the people in your photo.

Everybody will see your family, plus you'll show them just how creative you are!

Studio J Mediterranean Cruise Layout

I've really enjoyed using Studio J to quickly do some of our layouts. While we have a ton (and I do mean a ton) of traditional layouts already done, it's fun to be able to create a layout in just a few moments, rather than a few hours. LOL! My Cruisin' Buddy and I take forever doing traditional layouts, but that's usually because we can't decide what pictures to use. Then, of course, it takes a while to decide on the layout itself.

I'm slowly expanding my blog. Seems there's never enough time to do everything I'd like to get done. As my mom used to say, "If I live to be 100, I'll still never do everything that I want to". Boy...do I agree with her! Another thing she used to say was "the days and weeks just fly by". As a child, I never understood that one. Remember how long the summers seemed and we wanted to get back to school to see all of our friends. Mom would say "Just wait unti you get older and you'll know what I mean". Well, I'm older and I sure know what she meant! Seems like I no sooner get up in the morning and it's time to go back to bed. Have you noticed on Fridays that it seems like it was just Sunday. LOL!!

Anyway, I've expanded my blog with some pages. I just put a new page with my Kits of the Month. Be sure to look above for the links to the pages.

Well, time to go out and plant some more flowers and weed some beds. Finally it's nice here! I planted all day yesterday and by the time I finished, I wasn't sure if I would ever stand upright again. LOL! Thankfully, I am straight up again today. LOL!!

Our Mediterranean Cruise layout

My Cruisin' Buddy and I are still working on our album from our Mediterranean Cruise in 2008. I'm not sure we'll ever actually finish and album, or two, or three....LOL!....as every time we go through our pictures we find more that we want to scrap. So, in order to quickly do some scrapping, we've been using Studio J also. These layouts look like real paper layouts unless you actually take them out of the page protectors to look. Here's another one we did recently.

We're still using the retired Vintage Travel My Reflections kit. Glad it's still available via Studio J as I don't think we bought enough actual paper kits to do all of our album(s). LOL!

CTMH Spray Pens vs Inkessentials Mini Misters from Ranger

Below is an article that was in the May 4, 2011, issue of Craft Critique's newsletter. It was written by Kristine Fowler

It's no secret, that like other industries, as things evolve, so do the tools of the trade. Even the simplest of tools see improvement over time, and the Spray Pen by Close To My Heart is a great example of such an evolution. Similar in form and function to the Inkessentials™ Mini Misters™ by Ranger, you can use the Spray Pen to 'mist' your projects and create visually interesting techniques with ink, paint, colour washes, alcohol, or other liquid media. Or, if you just need a handy alternate dispenser, you can even fill the Spray Pen with your favorite stamp cleaner (although you have to admit, that's not very exciting). If you're not already familiar with the mister tools, you can always pop over and read a 2008 article by Heather Strenzwilk where she gives the low-down on the Ranger Mini Misters.

So at this point you might be wondering, what I consider to be the big evolution? How could such a simple product be so drastically improved? Well, to start, let's take a close up look at the two products side-by-side.

The most obvious difference between the two products is their size. The Close To My Heart Spray Pen is about a third larger overall affecting the relative size of both the cap and the liquid storage compartment (the barrel). The benefit of the larger container should be obvious....with a larger container, you can mix more media, and that's definitely a good thing. (I'll talk about the cap in a minute).

Now let's take another look.

You might notice, that on the flip side of the CTMH Spray Pen, you'll see measurement lines - a very handy feature that is missing from the Ranger Mini Mister. With the measurement lines clearly marked on the barrel, you can more 'scientifically' mix your media (think 4 parts water to 1 part paint, or 2 drops reinker to 6 parts water). This also means that it will be much easier to duplicate a mixture that you absolutely love at a later date. No more guess work. Pure genius! The Ranger Mini Mister on the other hand has product logos on both sides of the barrel, no measurement lines.

Next, let's look at the cap/nozzle area as there's a couple of major differences here. On the Ranger version, the entire barrel is smooth. The smooth finish extends to cover the part of the barrel that you 'twist' to remove the nozzle and fill the compartment. In contrast, this 'twistable' section of the CTMH product is textured, in order to give you better grip. This textured finish is particularly helpful if your hands are damp.

And now the cap.....again, there are a couple of differences. First, the CTMH cap is made of essentially the same material as the rest of the unit. The Ranger cap is quite thin in comparison, and might not stand up quite as well to even a little abuse. I'm thinking that if it drops on the floor, and I step on it, it's likely going to crack, rendering it essentially useless. The CTMH version on the other hand is more substantial, and although I'm not willing to put it to the test (sorry), I'm pretty certain I could step on it without hurting it too too badly.

Secondly, there is a series of holes in the top of the CTMH Spray Pen cap, and the Mini Mister doesn't have these. We've seen this type of thing before, and it serves a dual purpose. First, the holes allow air to be pushed out of the cap as your closing it to ensure that it closes snugly, and second, it's a safety feature. If for some reason a child was to put the cap in their mouth and swallow it, the vent holes in the cap could prevent asphyxiation. The other major difference in the caps, is the presence of the 'pocket clip' on the CTMH version. While I probably won't be carrying the Spray Pens in my shirt pocket any time soon, it is beneficial. Not only can I use the clip to secure the Spray Pen to the inside of my crop bag, but by virtue of it's existence the 'pocket clip' stops the Pen (when capped) from rolling off the table, and stops the cap rolling off the table (and under my feet) when the Spray Pen is in use. Once again, a small improvement in design has what I consider big benefit.

When it comes to function, these pens are virtually identical. Both pens 'pump' easily, and with neither version have I experienced 'clogging'. I do find the CTMH pen a bit easier to operate though because it feels more substantial. When spraying, the Mini Mister feels almost 'consumed' by my hand, whereas the CTMH version does not. This is perhaps a matter of personal preference, and if you're used to the feel of one version, you may find it initially awkward to make the switch, but it'll be easy to adjust either way. Looking very closely at the actual nozzles of the two pens reveals a minor difference, in that the little plastic piece which is responsible for directing the spray on the CTMH Spray Pen is angled downward ever so slightly whereas the Ranger version is completely straight. I'm not sure if this can really be considered a benefit, as I've not noticed any functional difference. I can only assume that the nozzle was in fact engineered this way for a reason, and presumably to provide some benefit - that's the best explanation I can offer you on that one unfortunately.

Before I get to the creative stuff, you're probably wondering about price. Does the price tag reflect the 'improvements' I've mentioned? Well, I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised to learn that the CTMH Spray Pens are priced very similarly to (if not better than in some cases) the Ranger Mini Misters. A 3-pack is available for just US$3.95 / CAN$4.50. Even once you add the shipping and taxes (if applicable in your area), these are definitely not going to break the bank. The Ranger Mini Misters I've purchased, I've always paid around CAN$5.00 for the 3-pack, regular priced, at various locations.

Now the fun stuff.....here's how I've used misters recently.

Using my CTMH Spray Pen and a mixture of reinker and water, I misted a 3x3 inch acrylic block and then used it like a stamp on my paper. This created the pink/white background for my focal image. I love the way that with this method I was able to get a nice solid pink in the middle, surrounded by what looks like over-spray.

For this second sample, I combined CTMH Create-A-Shade Paint, Water and Reinker and used the mixture to 'mist' the large green panel which was previously embossed (using a Tim Holtz Texture Fade), and then inked with both brown and juniper colored inks. Unfortunately, if I do say so myself, this photo does not do the card justice. I hope though that you can at least catch a glimpse of the shimmering splotches. Adding the pearl paint to the mixture, your spray takes on an iridescent look, and it's actually quite shiny! It's similar to the look you would get with commercial mists that are designed to sparkle.

So....to wrap this up, here's a quick summary of how I view the product differences (red indicates distinct product advantages). Remember from the perspective of function and price, the products are virtually identical.

The one fact that I have not tested is whether the CTMH Spray Pens fit in the (very compact) Inkessentials™ Mini Mister Organizer storage block by Ranger. Both the CTMH Spray Pen and the Mini Misters appear to have the same circumference (although I don't have a micrometer; if there is a difference it appears that minute), and so I would assume the Spray Pens would fit, but I would love it if somebody out there could put this to the test. CTMH does not currently offer a storage solution for the Spray Pens, and it certainly would be handy.

Simply Sophisticated

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” said Leonardo da Vinci, and who could argue with that great artist? The seeming simplicity of the My Acrylix® Fill In the Blanks stamp set (D1465) is what makes it such a perfect—and perfectly versatile—addition to any stamper’s toolbox!

The words and outline images that make up this set really lend themselves to a variety of looks and techniques. Let’s take a peek at some artwork!

The butterflies on this card are stamped tone-on-tone using the small butterfly image from the Fill In the Blank set, and then we took word stamps and stamped them in first and second generation to create our own patterned paper.

I've also used the small butterfly stamp on this layout, but can you guess what other stamp I used from the set? If you guessed “flower,” you’re right! Since our My Acrylix stamps are flexible, I’ve scrunched up the flower stamp in different ways to get these cute cloud images. I stamped them on B&T Duos® paper to give them a subtle pattern.

For this card, I cut out the large butterfly stamp image a few times and then layered it to make it dimensional. Here are the steps so you can make it yourself:

Stamp butterfly with Desert Sand ink on Colonial White cardstock. Using a craft knife, cut along wings, leaving body intact. Mount cardstock piece on Cocoa cardstock and Bamboo B&T paper. Pop up wings using 3-D foam tape.

Stamp butterfly again on Crystal Blue B&T paper. Cut out entire image, omitting body. Mount on Colonial White butterfly using 3-D foam tape.

Stamp butterfly a third time on Sweet Leaf B&T paper. Cut out entire image, including body, and mount on Crystal Blue butterfly with 3-D foam tape.

Accent body with Opaques Mocha adhesive gems.

This card, featured in the Spring/Summer 2011 Idea Book on page 96, also shows the stamping on B&T paper technique. This time I used the bird stamp, and the background pattern is much stronger. To give visual variety, I stamped the bird’s wing on a complementary piece of Grey Wool cardstock. Then, I stamped three different sentiments with Grey Wool ink, then highlighted one of them by stamping over it in Goldrush ink. This brings in a third color and makes the “friends always” sentiment stand out as the main message of the card.

Does this card look familiar, too? It’s also from the Spring/Summer 2011 Idea Book on page 96. Check out the Hollyhock cardstock on the sides. I stamped the flower on it in a repeating pattern to make an abstract, subtle patterned paper. Notice how the petals overlap in various spots? This gives the flower image a whole new look!

And here’s a final technique for you: using the stamp set as a cutting guide for negative space then filling it with a patterned paper to give visual interest. To create the stars you see in this layout, follow these steps:

Stamp three stars on top of your layout, overlapping paper pieces and photos.

Use a craft knife to cut out the center, leaving a 1/8" border, and distress the edges with a stipple brush dipped in Desert Sand re-inker.

Stamp three 2 1/2" × 2 1/2" pieces of Colonial White cardstock with words or phrases, using Cocoa ink and first, second, and third generation.

Attach the cardstock pieces to the back of your layout so the sentiments show through.

Accent each star with a pair of Opaques Mocha adhesive gems to give them even more zing!

These are some of the Studio J layouts that I've done recently. With the Studio J membership comes some "members only" layout options. I hadn't had a chance to play with it until the other day, and decided to do more of our Mediterranean Cruise photos. I think I have to face the fact that I'll never get the 1000 or more pictures scrapped traditionally. The Studio J layouts look so much like regular, traditional scrap pages. One needs to remove the layouts from the page protectors to know they aren't done with paper!

November Club projects

I have to say, I'm quite pleased with how all of these layouts turned out! You know how sometimes, they have to grow on you.....well, these I liked from the start. LOL!

Above are the Stamp a Stack cards. We used the Tag the Occasion stamp set for these. I didn't realize how many circles I had used until I started punching them to pack in the club kits. LOL!! My room looks like a disaster at the moment. With all my scrapping/stamping stuff and all of my sewing materials out, it was easier to punch the circles than it was to move things to get to the Cricut and to find a place to put it. LOL!!

For the Cherish Club, we used X7130B Mistletoe Level 2 kit. I love these papers! They are such traditional and elegant papers. Love the Mistletoe embellishments also!

And, for our Imagine Club, we used the beautiful X7119B Veranda Level 2 kit.

Christmas Card Workshop

I had a great time making these cards! I love Christmas anyway, so, even tho it's only October, it sure is time to crank up the holiday music and do some creating. Below are the cards for the October Stamp a Stack club. We're using CTMH C1424, Nature's Gift. This is also a great set for the man of the house, as pairing the animals with a masculine paper, one can make some great "man" cards.

For the Cherish Club, we're using the CTMH Olivia papers. These papers are so pretty and I love the variation in the papers.

For the Imagine Club, we're using the retiring CTMH Notebook papers. I love these papers and hated to see them go. So glad I had picked up a few extra packages before they were on the $2,$4,$6 sale!

It's time for another round of the Cherish, Imagine and Stamp a Stack Clubs! Each club is a four month commitment. These are the pages we are doing in September for the Imagine Club.

You can see some of the other Imagine Club projects that we have done here. Each month you will receive 1/2 of a CTMH My Reflections kit, embellishment and complete instructions to complete two 2-page layouts. All this for only $20!

New Orphan Foal pics

I can't believe he's going to be 3 months old tomorrow! Man, did that time fly by! I'm in the process of weaning him off the bottle, and it's so sad as he just loves his bottles. He can suck down those 8 ozs. in a matter of seconds. LOL!! I finally was able to stop getting up to feed him in the middle of the night a couple of weeks ago. To illustrate how quickly he can down two 8 oz bottles...I would get up at 2am, heat the bottles, feed him, then fall back into bed, usually by 2:10! LOL!! I think I was already asleep by the time I got back into the house. LOL!! Here's a couple of new pictures. These were taken a couple of weeks ago. How cute is he?! We're now putting him out in the paddock for a few hours every few days.

Busy, busy, busy!

I can't believe it's been so long since I updated my blog! I've been very busy! The orphan horse is doing so well! He turned 7 weeks old this week and has really filled out. I'll try to get a picture, but it's getting harder and harder. He's a very wild boy and is all over the stall. One needs to watch their back at all times. LOL!! I'm so pleased to see him do so well!

Also, wanted to give you a heads up. Close To My Heart had their convention last week and eight colors are being retired. The ones retiring are: Clover Meadow, Hydrangea, Orange, Star Spangled Blue, Bubblegum, Citrus Leaf, Ocean, and Watermelon. So, if any of those are on your favorites list, I'd grab the products now as there's no way to know how long they will still be around.

Update on my little man-man

He is so cute...I just can't stand it! He's made it through a week of bottle feeding and seems to be doing well. It's going to take awhile to put any meat on the little guy. :( He's starting to cop a tude tho! LOL!! He gets an attitude when the bottles run dry and will pin his ears. LOL! I just tried to take a new picture, but he's too fast for me. LOL! I run from one side of the stall to the other and by the time the camera gets focused he's standing right in front of me again. LOL! Keep thinking positive thoughts for him, as he's not totally out of the woods yet.

How cute is this little guy?? He is such a sweety. :) He was born Wednesday evening. Looks to be a little preemie as he is small. As planned, we were there when he was born and stayed right there as we weren't sure how his mom would be as a mom. She had a foal last year that was badly deformed and only took a couple of breaths. She put her hoof on it's heart, so we weren't sure if that was just animal instinct, or if she meant to be mean. Anyway, we decided we needed to stay right with her until we knew how she would react. After about an hour, it was obvious that this little guy would not be safe with her, so we had to separate them. So, now he's my bottle baby....although I think he thinks I'm his mom :) He's flying around the stall already and it was hard to snap any pictures as I'd run to one side of the stall and before the camera would focus, he'd be right in front of me again. LOL!! After trying to snap the pictures, he decided it was time to eat again...think of the movie where the baby says Lunch. LOL! Can't remember the name of it :)

Now, I' sure you're wondering why I have this picture of my finger here. The strangest thing happened! While feeding the little guy, some of his mother's milk got on my hands. In less than a minute my middle finger started to swell. It became purple and full of edema so that I couldn't even bend it. There were no cuts on the finger to let the milk get under the skin. I came in and washed it, iced it and even put some Benedryl spray on it. I'm assuming it's an allergic reaction to the mother's milk, so now I'm using a plastic glove on that hand just in case. It's still swollen this morning and even more purple than it was yesterday. Hopefully, it goes away quickly!
